IS THERE AN EFFECT OF THE DISCIPLINE ON WRITING STYLE OF GRADUATE STUDENTS?

Abstracts

This research study aims to find out whether writing styles of young people studying different disciplines are similar, or whether there is a difference in their writing styles in ways attributable to influences from their study disciplines.

The writing styles of two groups of Israeli graduate students were compared. One group consisted of medical residents and the other of graduate students in teacher training. The writing styles of the two groups were analyzed regarding vocabulary, syntax, and text criteria based on coherence studies.

The results of the study show that there were major differences in the writing styles of the two groups. Generally the writing style of the teacher trainee students was better but violation of rules of coherence existed in both groups. A course in writing should be added to the curriculum for both groups.
