ACHIEVING FOOD SECURITY THROUGH REGIONAL INTEGRATION: A CASE OF FOOD TRADE WITHIN ECOWAS REGION....

The influence of food trade dynamics on regional integration and food security among ECOWAS Member States was investigated in this study. The research used secondary data spanning 43 years (1970–2012). The data was taken from the FAOSTAT database. The Overall Openness Index (OPI), the Intensity of Trade Index, and the Herfindahl index were among the analytical tools used. Smaller economies are more receptive to trade than larger economies, according to the study. The study found that once the region became a free trade area (FTA), regional intensity of trade (RIT) increased, food trade diversity grew, and regional food insecurity decreased dramatically. The research advised that the area accelerate steps to put in place the essential measures to make the tradition legal.
