ACTIVATION PARAMETER AND SOLVENT EFFECT ON SOLVOLYSIS OF ETHYL BENZOATE IN AQUO-ORGANIC SOLVENT ....
The rate of solvolysis of ethyl benzoate in a water-methanol mixture at varied compositions was determined volumetrically throughout a temperature range of 20°C to 400°C. The decrease and increase in the value of iso-composition activation energy and iso-dielectric activation, respectively, indicate solvation in the transition state and de-solvation in the starting state. In terms of activation parameter, the effect of solvent on reaction rate was investigated. The simultaneous drop in DH* and DS* values with an increase in DG* value with solvent composition indicates that the reaction is regulated by Enthalpy dominance and Entropy. Because the iso-kinetic temperature is less than 300 K/mole2, there is little interaction between the solvent and the solute.
