ADSORPTION OF NAPHTHALENE BY CARBON MESOPOROUS (CMK-3) FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS | Journal of ...
In this study, Hexagonal mesoporous silica SBA-15 was used to make mesoporous carbon CMK-3, which was used as an adsorbent for poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Small Angle X-ray Diffraction (SAXRD), Raman Spectroscopy, X-ray Photo-electron Spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis were used to characterise the structural and textural properties of the synthesised materials.
All of the tests were carried out in a slurry system at room temperature and pressure. By adjusting the starting concentration of naphthalene and the solution pH, the adsorption capability of naphthalene on CMK-3 was studied. The maximal naphthalene adsorption capacity on CMK-3 was calculated to be 160 mg g-1. The results also revealed that as contact duration increased, the adsorption capacity increased significantly. Furthermore, when the initial naphthalene concentration is increased from 5 to 30 ppm, the adsorption capacity increases from 54 to 161 mg/g.
Another notable discovery was that pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 =0.9999) best fit adsorption processes and equilibrium data, followed by intra-particle diffusion and Freundlich adsorption models (R2 =0.9936).
