ALDO LEOPOLD’S LAND ETHIC AND DESERTIFICATION IN NORTHERN NIGERIA: AN ETHICAL APPROACH | Journal...

Desertification in Northern Nigeria: An Ethical Approach is based on Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic. Desertification is a global environmental issue that has affected both developed and developing countries across the globe. Nigeria is one of the countries south of the Sahara that is experiencing rapid desertification, which has had a particularly negative impact on the country's northern regions. Desertification has been observed and documented in northern Nigeria since the 1920s, according to the study, but its effect or influence has been visible since the famine of 1971–1973. The issue of desertification in northern Nigeria is the subject of this research. As a result, the study examines Nigeria's desertification problem and compares it to Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic. The purpose of this study was to clarify Aldo Leopold's Land Ethic and how it may be applied to the problem of desertification using the content analysis method. The topic of desertification was also investigated using the analytic method. The study also found that the government has not done enough to address this environmental threat that is unique to Nigeria's northern regions. The study discovered that anthropocentric activities are the primary drivers of desertification, as well as the fact that desertification is a big problem in northern Nigeria. Finally, the work suggests that the government should not only enact environmental legislation, but also go above and beyond to ensure that these laws are followed by the public, i.e., by enforcing them.
