ASSESSMENT OF THE ROLES OF NON-TIMBER FOREST PRODUCTS IN THE LIVELIHOOD SUSTAINANCE IN GUJBA LOCAL..

The impact of non-timber forest products on livelihood sustainability in the Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, Nigeria, was investigated. The respondents were chosen at random using a multi-stage sampling approach. A total of one hundred (100) questionnaires were distributed, with twenty-five (25) copies being distributed to each of the four wards. The questionnaire was coded and analysed using descriptive statistics, with the data gathered being sent to chi-square analysis to check if there were any significant differences among the respondents. Men and women were found to be involved in the collecting of various NTFPs, which are primarily used locally and to a lesser extent commercially. Fruits, leaves, gums, epiphytes, barks, and fauna are all examples. Among the most commonly gathered items is gum Arabic, which is heavily advertised. The majority of the respondents were between the ages of 31 and 40 (33.3% were male, dominated by (60.2%) and whose household ranged from 3 to 4 (32.4%), and had no formal education (47.7%), and the majority of the collectors were married (70.2 percent ). Farming is the most common occupation, with 31.5 percent of farmers relying on NTFPs. In conclusion, the gathering of NTFPs for livelihood sustainability in Gujba LGA, through provision of diverse NTFPs such as leaves, fruits, gums, and fauna for domestic use and sales for money generation, has become extremely important.
