BIOCOMPATIBLE, BIODEGRADABLE PEPTIDES FOR HEAVY METAL TOXICITY REMOVAL | Journal of Applied ......

Cyclic peptides high in arginine and tryptophan have been investigated for their potential use in heavy metal toxicity elimination. On these compounds, ab initio molecular orbital computations with extensive geometry optimizations were done to investigate their effectiveness in heavy metal non covalent complexation. The results of different ultraviolet absorption spectra show that the absorption band between 275-300 nm could be used to monitor metal binding. Both the theoretical and experimental data support the creation of a 1:1 peptide-metal combination. It is demonstrated that these systems may be tweaked to achieve metal specificity and may serve as a starting point for creating biocompatible medications for heavy metal toxicity elimination.
