CHARACTERIZATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF SOILS FROM SELECTED AREAS IN BENUE STATE SOUTHERN GUINEA.....

In 2009, the soils of a few places in Benue state were described and categorised in order to provide information for good land use planning for sustainable agriculture. Six profile trenches were dug, and soil samples were taken for physical and chemical investigation in the laboratory. The soil's textural makeup ranged from loamy sand to sandy loam to clay loam. In most portions of the locations, the pH ranged from slightly acidic to moderately acidic in reaction. All of the studied locations had very little organic stuff. Phosphorus availability was poor in all of the areas. The total nitrogen content was mostly very low to low. CEC was also variable, ranging from very low to low. SIWES Farm Typic ustochrepts, Obarike Oju, Vertic tropaquept, and Otobi Typic Kandiaqualf were the soil classifications. Typic Kandiustalf at NYSC Farm; Typic Kandiustalf at Adum-Ito; and Oxic Ustropept at Otukpa. The soils in the research regions are classed as moderate to good land with few physical and chemical constraints that can be addressed to increase crop output within the study areas, according to class II of the land capacity classification.
