COMPARATIVE STUDIES ON THE EFFICACY OF PRIMEXTRA GOLD IN CONTROLLING WEEDS OF MELON (Citrillus .....
A pot experiment was undertaken at the University of Port Harcourt's Centre for Ecological Studies in Rivers State, Nigeria, to investigate the performance of Primextra Gold herbicide in reducing weeds in melon and cucumber, as well as the level of crop injury. With four replications, the experiment was set up in a Randomized Completely Design. Preemergence, seven herbicide dosages were applied: 0.0kg a.i/pot (D0), 0.25 kg a.i/pot (D1), 0.5 kg a.i/pot (D2), 0.75 kg a.i/pot (D3), 1.0 kg a.i/pot (D4), 1.25 kg a.i/pot (D5), and 1.5 kg a.i/pot (D6). The herbicide efficacy and crop harm were determined using dry weight, plant height, number of green leaves, weed control efficiency, weed persistence index, crop phytotoxicity rating, and weed destruction rating. The melon recovered from harm produced by lesser doses (D1, D2, D3), however higher doses (D4, D5, D6) resulted in stand loss and crop destruction. At 28 DAT, melon treated with D3 had the highest average height (72 cm/pot), the highest number of leaves per pot (20), and the second highest average dry weight (2.98g/pot). Except at 7 DAT, all of the dosages administered resulted in a 50 percent damage to the cucumber. Primextra Gold has a high Weed Control Efficiency (WCE percent) and a low Weed Persistence Index (WPI) of the weeds, according to the study. Primextra Gold has a high weed-destructive rating, with doses causing mild to total weed-destructive effects.
