CORROSION RESISTANCE OF COPPER IN UNPOLLUTED AND SULFIDE POLLUTED SALT WATER BY METRONIDAZOLE......
In unpolluted and sulfide-polluted 3.5 percent NaCl, the corrosion prevention of copper by metronidazole (MDA) was examined. Electrochemical experiments revealed that MDA is a cathodic type inhibitor for copper; this behaviour can be seen in the open circuit potential, but MDA reduces copper's potential to a negative value. The efficiency in unpolluted and polluted sulphide salt water was 68 percent and 73 percent, respectively, according to potentiodynamic polarisation curves. In sulfide-polluted salt water, the polarisation resistance Rp values obtained from EIS curves were higher than those obtained in unpolluted salt water. These findings revealed that the protective MDA-copper complex was more stable in the presence of sulphide ions. MDA protected copper from sulphide attack by adsorption on the copper surface to form a protective coating from MDA-copper complex, according to Scanning Electron Microscopy SEM with Energy Dispersive X-ray EDS spectra.
