DECREASING POPULATION OF Scutellaria discolor Colebr. AND Plectranthus galeatus Vahl. (Lamiaceae) ..

The populations of Scutellaria discolour Colebr and Plectranthus galeatus Vahl, both members of the mint family (Lamiaceae), are gradually diminishing. Recently, their populations have only been found in the mountains or highlands, or on the fringes of still-protected forests, such as Mount Salak and Telaga Warna. The purpose of this study was to count the number of parents and seedlings in a population of Scutellaria discolour Colebr and Plectranthus galeatus Vahl. in Mount Salak and Telaga Warna, West Java Province, Indonesia. The strategy employed in this investigation was parallel transect lines. There was also evidence of existing plant associations among the communities in the area. At altitudes above 1200 m above sea level, there are 203 seedlings and 167 parents of S. discolour species, while there are 83 seedlings and 13 parents of P. galeatus. There are 76 seedlings and 45 parents of S. discolour and 12 seedlings and 9 parents of P. galeatus, which is higher than populations below 1200 m height. In Telaga Warna, S. discolour is only found at heights above 1500 metres above sea level, with 251 seedlings and 154 parents. At altitudes over 1500 m, there are 71 seedlings and 90 parents of P. galeatus. There are 18 seedlings and 8 parents at an altitude of less than 1500 metres, which is extremely rare. At an altitude of 1100-1300 m asl in Mount Salak, populations of S. discolour and P. galeatus are a balance between seedlings and their parent population. Seedling populations of S. discolour are similar at an altitude of 1526 - 1587 m asl, but seedling numbers of P. galeatus decline at an altitude of 1444 - 1599 m asl in Telaga Warna.
