DETERMINANTS OF FERTILIZER USAGE AMONG RICE FARMERS IN ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA | Journal of Global..
The study looked into the factors that influence fertiliser use among rice farmers in Nigeria's Anambra state. The study employed multistage sampling approaches. Out of the 21 local governments in the state, four were purposefully chosen due to their prominence in rice cultivation. Two localities were chosen from each local government, for a total of eight communities in the study. Rice farmers account for 25,000 people in Anambra State (Wikipedia.org/Wiki/AnambraState,2010).
Using simple random selection techniques, fifteen (15) rice farmers were chosen from each village, for a total sample size of 120 farmers. A structured interview schedule was used to obtain data. The data was analysed using percentages, frequencies, mean scores, and a regression model. According to the findings, 70.8 percent of farmers were male, while 29.2 percent were female. Farmers had an average age of 39 years, while households had an average age of 5. Farmers were married 39.2 percent of the time and single 23.3 percent of the time. The average rice farm size was 1.6 hectares. Similarly, the average farming experience was 11 years, and the vast majority of farmers (98 percent) did not use shifting cultivation. Almost all of the farmers bought their agricultural inputs from input dealers, and 85 percent of them utilised fertiliser at a high rate. Only five variables were found to be statistically significant in terms of the determinants of fertiliser usage among rice farmers in the research region, out of thirteen variables analysed. Farm size (t=8.827,p=0.00), soil fertility (-3.988,p=0.000), perceived constraint (t=-5.223,p=0.000), agricultural practise (t=4.050,p=0.000), and received training (t=2.949,p=0.004) were the factors.
