DETERMINANTS OF PRODUCTIVITY LEVEL AMONG CASSAVA FARMERS IN ANAMBRA STATE, NIGERIA | Journal of ...

The researchers looked into the factors that influence cassava growers' productivity in Nigeria's Anambra State. The study employed multistage sampling approaches. Out of the 21 local governments in Anambra state, four were chosen specifically for their popularity in cassava cultivation. Two localities were chosen from each local government, for a total of eight communities in the study. However, using basic random sampling techniques, 15 cassava growers were chosen from each village, giving a total sample size of 120 farmers. A structured interview schedule was used to obtain data. The data was analysed using percentages, frequency, mean scores, and regression analysis. According to the findings, female farmers made up 78.3 percent of the total, while male farmers made up 21.7 percent. The farmers were an average of 39 years old. The majority of the farmers (37.7%) were married, and 65.5 percent of the farmers worked full-time as cassava growers. Approximately 67.5 percent of farmers had completed high school, while 18.3 percent had no formal education. Farmers produced cassava on an average of 1.6 hectares of land, with 85 percent of them using enhanced cassava varieties. The average number of years spent farming was ten. Approximately 65 percent of farmers have access to loans, but the vast majority (77.5 percent) do not have access to extension services. Only four variables were found to be statistically significant as drivers of production level among cassava farmers in the study region, out of fourteen variables tested. Farm size (t=6.668, p=0.000), educational level (t=3.365, p=0.001), extension contact (t=-3.605, p=0.001), and perceived constraints (t=-3.057, p=0.003) were the factors that were studied.
