DETERMINANTS OF WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN COLLECTIVE SELF-HELP PROGRAMMES IN IJEBU DIVISION OF OGUN....

Through self-help efforts and entrepreneurial self-reliance, the concept of women empowerment as an aim of development programmes is gaining traction in underdeveloped countries around the world. Developing the human, organisational, and management ability of women people to solve problems that are fundamental to their welfare improvement is one of the primary goals of self-help economic development programmes. Women make little or no money to take care of their homes, educate and clothe their children, and contribute effectively to their communities' socioeconomic needs. Women in agrarian communities rarely have adequate time to work on the family's farm, and their earnings frequently fall to absurdly low levels. In the Sagamu area of Ogun State, Nigeria, this study looked at the factors that influence women's engagement in collective self-help development programmes, as well as the impact of such participation on their socioeconomic condition. Adult women's primary data was acquired using a systematic sampling technique and structured questionnaires. The factors of women's participation in self-help economic programmes were estimated using a Probit regression model. Household size (0.0345; p0.01), spouse's political membership (0.1351; p0.1), and years of respondent's formal education (-0.0079; p0.1) were all factors that substantially influenced women's engagement in collective self-help programmes. Against expectations, respondents' years of formal education had an inverse relationship with their amount of participation in collective self-help programmes. Major steps toward obtaining a sustained level of women participation in collective self-help programmes in the study area include mobilising the community women elite and providing suitable orientation for male household heads on the benefits of collective self-help programmes and grass-root politics.
