EVALUATION OF HEAVY METALS IN PLANTS FROM PREVIOUSLY REMEDIATED SITES IN NIGER DELTA, NIGERIA ...
Heavy metal concentrations such as lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), and iron (Fe) were measured in 48 plant samples from previously remediated oil spill sites in Abia, Imo, and Rivers states using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) for two seasons to assess their availability in the plants. Using IBM SPSS version 26.0, the results were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and multiple comparisons. The results showed that zinc, copper, chromium, and copper concentrations were below WHO's minimal threshold of 6.0 mg/kg, while cadmium and mercury levels were below the AAS's detectable level. Lead concentrations in all plant samples, however, above WHO's minimum permissible levels of 0.1 mg/kg and 0.2/0.3 for WHO/FOA joint guidelines.
