IMPACT OF ASPHALT MIXING ACTIVITIES ON THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SOIL WITHIN ....

The impact of asphalt mixing on the physical and chemical features of soil was investigated in this study. Soil samples were taken from three asphalt producing sites in the Metropolis of Port Harcourt. The following were the mean values of the physicochemical parameters: pH was 6.2570.070, electrical conductivity was 113.25.385 mg/kg, total organic carbon was 2.4400.051%, total organic matter was 4.2110.086 percent, and nitrate was 0.4560.028 mg/kg. Moisture content was 3.600.535 percent, clay content was 11.170.624 percent, silt was 3.000.816 percent, and sand was 86.830.23 percent. Phosphate was 3.630.205 mg/kg, ammonia was 0.1440.002 mg/kg, nitrogen was 0.1200.006 mg/kg, and sulphate was 1.1300.08 mg/kg in the soil. The findings of this study indicate that, while the levels of soil parameters were within permissible ranges, they may have a negative impact on the soil in the near future, perhaps affecting its use for other purposes once the site has been abandoned.
