IMPACT OF CLIMATE VARIABILITY ON RURAL LIVELIHOOD ON THE NIGERIAN MAMBILLA PLATEAU | Journal of ...

Climate change is posing a significant threat to long-term economic development, notably in Sub-Saharan Africa. Because of their reliance on rain-fed agriculture, limited financial and adaptive capacity, high reliance on natural resources, low technology, and weak infrastructures, small-scale farmers in the region suffer the most. Understanding the rising trend of climate variability and its influence on rural livelihoods is a critical first step in adapting to and mitigating climate change. The impact of climate variability on rural livelihood on the Nigerian Mambilla plateau is investigated in this study. For 30 years (1981–2010), climatic data such as mean monthly and yearly temperatures, rainfall totals, and rain days per annum were collected. Using simple regression and correlation analysis, the climatic data was utilised to determine trends in time series of parameters such as yearly rainfall, length of rainy season, and onset and cessation of rainy season. The data suggest a decrease in temperature, an increase in yearly rainfall, a late commencement and cessation, and a shorter rainy season. Farmers are finding it difficult to properly time their planting season due to changing climatic trends, resulting in wilting crops and the need to replenish seeds after the first planting. Farmers should be empowered with information on climate change adaptation measures and improved seed types, according to this study.
