IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON WEST AFRICA INTRA-TRADE: EVIDENCE FROM BENIN’S CROSS-BORDER TRADE | Journal..
The economic costs of the COVID-19 epidemic are still being felt in nations throughout the world, highlighting the necessity for researchers to give enough knowledge to policymakers in order to guide the adoption of appropriate policies. Meanwhile, the spatial variability of COVID-19's spread and the variety in nations' resilience capabilities suggest the significance of country-level research rather than cross-country research. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on Benin's bilateral commerce. The Poisson pseudo maximum likelihood technique was used to build a gravity model using monthly data from January 2020 to March 2021. COVID-19 has a far stronger ability to disrupt Benin's bilateral commerce, according to our findings. When recognised by restrictive measures rather than the pandemic's lethality, showing that limits on encounters are more destructive to commerce than the hazards of death associated with the disease's transmission. However, our findings indicated that these impacts are transient and are gradually absorbed over time, indicating that economies are better able to adjust to the epidemic.
