INVESTIGATION FOR DEFORESTATION DRIVERS IN LUME DISTRICT, OROMIA REGION, CENTRAL ETHIOPIA .....
Forest cover change is caused by a variety of factors all throughout the world. Lume district's woodlands are currently facing major problems as a result of both direct and indirect factors. As a result, the primary goal of this research is to identify commonly observed driving forces in the district. For determining the driving forces of change, qualitative data was obtained through key informant interviews, household surveys, and focus group discussions. The data collected from participants was processed and analysed using EXCEL and R software. Income and land holding size have a detrimental impact on forest cover change, according to socioeconomic data. The study's findings demonstrated that forest cover change in the study area was caused by both proximate and underlying factors. The key proximal factors detected in the site were agricultural land growth (314), urban expansion and settlement area (244) and fuel wood and charcoal (145). Furthermore, the study's findings indicated that the most common underlying drivers of forest cover change in the district were rapid population growth (39 percent), landlessness (25 percent), lack of awareness (19 percent), and insufficient law enforcement (17 percent). To manage limited resources and meet the demand of a growing population sustainably, advanced land use policy, diverse job opportunities, adaption of new technologies, boosting stakeholder awareness, and implementation of existing law enforcement are highly recommended.
