KINETIC SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF NITRITE BASED ON ITS CATALYTIC EFFECT ON THE OXIDATION..

The method for determining nitrite in water samples is explained using a kinetic catalytic approach. Celestine Blue (CB) is oxidised by bromate in acidic solution to yield a colourless chemical. Trace levels of nitrite speed up the process, which may be monitored by measuring the absorbance at 545 nm. The reaction is monitored spectrophotometrically using a fixed time approach to measure the decrease in absorbance. The change in absorbance was used as an analytical signal, which was measured every 5 minutes. 1 mol.dm-3 sulfuric acid, 2.75 10-4 mol.dm-3 CB, 1.210-3 mol.dm-3 bromate, and 4.310-5 mol.dm-3 nitrite were used as the optimal experimental conditions. The detection limit for nitrite was determined to be between 4.310-5 and 4.310-6 mol.dm-3. The amount of nitrite in natural river water, tap water, sausage samples, and waste water samples was evaluated using this method.
