OPTIMIZATION OF CHEMICAL EXTRACTION OF CHITIN FROM PINK SHRIMP (Parapenaeus longirostris .....

The chemical extraction of chitin from the shells of pink shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris (Lucas, 1846)) was optimised and modelled using response surface methodology (RSM). For the demineralization step, the design variables (parameters) were the concentration and volume of HCl, as well as the reaction time, and for the deproteinization step, the concentration and volume of NaOH, as well as the reaction time and temperature. The results revealed that the experimental protein removal levels matched those predicted by the linear mathematical model. For the demineralization stage, the best values of the variables were 0.32 M HCl, 3 h reaction time, and 60 ml of HCl volume (solid/liquid ratio of 1/120 (w/v)), and for protein removal, NaOH 0.1 M within 1 h with 200 ml of NaOH (solid to liquid ratio of 1/400 (w/v) and at 30°C.
