Buchwald-Hartwig aminations of 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone catalysed by palladium - 1,4-bis-(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylbenzyl)piperazine yield high yields of 3-arylamino derivatives of the naphthoquinones. On cotton fabrics, an investigation of their dyestuff qualities revealed a wide range of colour colours, with mordanted materials having greater fastness properties. TLC and 1HNMR were used to characterise the dyes.
