PHYCOREMEDIATION OF MANGANESE BY Spirogyra AND Richterella SPECIES ISOLATED FROM POND | Journal of

Heavy metals are non-biodegradable contaminants that must be removed or reduced to safe levels before being released into the environment to prevent endangering living species. The purpose of this study was to see how effective Richterella and Spirogyra species were at removing manganese from ponds. The manganese removal efficacy of the two algae was tested over a 28-day period at room temperature (28oC) and under regular illumination. On day 28, Richterella species removed 90.3 percent of manganese, while Spirogyra species removed 87.1 percent. The optimal phycoremediation pH was 9, with the same Manganese removal value as before. On day 14, Richterella species removed 89.4 percent of manganese, whereas Spirogyra species removed 86.1 percent. Species of Richterella and Spirogyra were discovered.
