PRODUCTION OF Phaseolus vulgaris L. (BEANS) AND Solanum tuberosum L. (POTATOES) UNDER EUCALYPTUS....

Crop production under less sunny conditions in a combination of trees and crops continues to be a barrier to producing both crops and trees on farms. It is critical to address this strain in order to improve both food security and environmental advantages at the same time. Woody perennials are purposely intercropped with animals and crops on the same piece of land in agroforestry, which is one of the beneficial techniques. In Dedza, Malawi, researchers evaluated the production of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) in Eucalyptus grandis tree plantations. Beans and potatoes were planted in plot sizes of 4m x 2m in a completely randomised design in three replicates along rows of Eucalyptus trees ages 3, 4, and 5 years, with an open field as a control. Germination, leaf area index (LAI), and yield were all evaluated. There were no significant (P>0.05) differences in crop germination, LAI, or yield among different age groups of tree plantings, according to the findings. Similarly, no significant (P>0.05) differences in germination were found between crops grown beneath trees and those grown in open fields. Crops cultivated under three-year-old Eucalyptus trees, on the other hand, had a higher mean germination rate of 92.264.17% for beans and 90.155.04% for potatoes. Similarly, crops that had been planted for less than three years had a higher mean LAI of 1.240.06 for beans and 1.690.05 for potatoes. Similarly, crops grown under Eucalyptus grandis for three years yielded 0.230.01 t/ha of beans and 5.350.20 t/ha of potatoes. For both potatoes (r = 0.997, P0.001) and beans (r = 0.964, P0.001), there was a strong positive connection between yield and LAI. As a result, beans and potatoes can be grown in an agroforestry system under Eucalyptus grandis trees to improve food security, but more research on additional Eucalyptus species is needed.
