QUALITY OF LIFE OF LOCAL SOCIAL SERVICE USERS AT MUNICIPALITY OF GLYFADA ATTICA, GREECE. RESULTS OF

At the Municipality of Glyfada, a pilot research was done to assess the quality of life (QoL) indicators of social service consumers. The study's goals were to: a) provide a comprehensive account of service users' QoL, b) examine interrelationships between subjective QoL indices and how these interrelate with global well-being, c) investigate life domains most affected by economic crisis as well as life domains that positively affect participants' QoL, and d) investigate how service users assess their needs and the types of services they would like to receive in order to improve their QoL.

A total of 100 service users took part in a structured interview based on the LQoL Profile for the study. Unemployed middle-aged men and women with yearly incomes of up to 6000 euros made up the bulk of social assistance users. Single-parent households headed by women with primary school children made up 63 percent of the sample. Positive markers of QoL included a) secure housing (the region has a very low rate of homelessness), b) a strong sense of security among participants in their community, and c) regular contact with family and friends. Local social services, in the opinion of the participants, should take a comprehensive approach that includes empowerment counselling as well as proper networking with community resources.
