RESPONSES OF SELECTED SOIL CHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND HEAVY METALS AS AFFECTED BY SEWAGE DUMP SOIL.....

The effects of sewage dump on selected soil chemical characteristics and heavy metals in Abakaliki, southern Nigeria, were investigated in this study. The following dump soils were chosen after a reconnaissance inspection of the study area: A (Abattoir sewage dump), B (Cassava sewage dump), C. (Domestic sewage dump), and D (Control – Non-sewage dump soil). Soil ph, Organic C, total N, accessible P, exchangeable bases, Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Cr were determined using five replicate auger soil samples obtained I m away from each dump at 0 – 30 cm soil depth. The findings revealed that sewage improves the chemical characteristics of soil. Heavy metals were also found to be greater in sewage dump soils than in control soils. The soil studied was also sandy loam. As a result, extreme caution must be exercised while depositing sewage in these soils, as sewage can easily contaminate subsurface water.
