This article looks into the rethinking of security and human security in Nigeria, as well as the causes and solutions for long-term food security. It claims that the discovery of oil, government policies, conflicts, poor infrastructure, and international economic policies have all hampered Nigeria's ability to achieve food self-sufficiency, and that these factors, among others, have made Nigeria a major food importer in the international system. Food is a tool in international politics, hence a food-dependent country is insecure, which means Nigeria is. The paper relied on primary and secondary sources and was based on dependence theory. It finds that continuing to rely on the developed world for food will result in hunger, a loss of farmers' economic basis, poverty, and other problems. The study suggests that the government take immediate actions to minimise its overdependence on food imports.

The agriculture sector should be encouraged to get more investment from both the public and private sectors. In addition, an alternate mechanism for the marketing board should be established to redistribute food in the first instance and then sell any excess to the international market for export.
