SCREENING OF TOMATO INBREDS AND THEIR F1S AGAINST EARLY BLIGHT (Alternaria solani) | Journal of ...
Early blight (EB) is a severe fungal disease of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) in India and worldwide, caused by the fungus Alternaria solani. By artificial inoculation using the detached leaf method, 43 tomato genotypes (13 lines and 30 F1s) were evaluated for early blight disease resistance. Based on the Percentage Disease Index (PDI) at 7 days following inoculation, the test genotypes were divided into four groups under artificial settings. Two F1s, H-24 Floradade and Fla 7171 Floradade, displayed resistant reactions with PDI ranging from 12.6 to 25%, while nine F1s showed moderate resistance (PDI 25.1-37.5 percent ). The disease reaction (PDI) in the remaining 18 was between 37.5 and 50 percent, indicating that they were vulnerable. One F1 was found to be extremely susceptible, with a PDI of more than 50%.
