SPATIAL DISTRIBUTIONS OF MAGNETIC POLLUTANTS AROUND ROAD NETWORKS IN ABUJA METROPOLIS | Journal....
Magnetic particle pollution is mostly caused by vehicle emissions, which are particularly prevalent in urban regions and locations with considerable automobile traffic. These magnetic grains collect along traffic corridors and become part of the roadside dust. Magnetic susceptibility mapping was undertaken around 20 busy road pavements in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, to study the spatial distribution and extent to which they can be deposited. According to the findings, magnetic susceptibility decreases with distance from road pavements, and deposition of these magnetic granules occurs at distances more than 8.0 metres from the road. Magnetic granules were found in high concentrations immediately after the road pavement up to a distance of about 3.0 m from the road pavement. This shows that these magnetic contaminants are primarily caused by automobile operations. It is also obvious from this research that magnetic susceptibility measurements can be utilised to map out contamination areas, particularly those contaminated with heavy metals.
