SUITABILITY EVALUATION OF SOILS OF ISHIAGU, EBONYI STATE, SOUTHEASTHERN NIGERIA FOR SUSTAINABLE ....
The fitness of a certain tract of land for a specific type of use has been defined as land suitability evaluation. The suitability of the soils at Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, for upland rice production was assessed. Three mapping units were chosen after a detailed soil assessment of the area was done using a rigid grid structure. In each mapping unit, a single profile pit was dug and analysed, with soil samples from pedogenetic horizons being analysed for particle size distribution, pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, accessible phosphorous, exchangeable cations, and cation exchange capacity. The analytical data's ramifications are examined. The productivity index approach was used to assess suitability; one mapping unit was moderately favourable for upland rice cultivation, whereas two mapping units were marginally suitable. The choices to be used in managing the soils to make them extremely appropriate for sustained highland rice production are discussed.
