THE PERFORMANCE OF BROILER CHICKENS FED VARYING LEVELS OF SOAKED AND BOILED SORREL (Hisbiscus sabdar
The purpose of this study was to see how well broiler chicks performed when fed different amounts of soaked and boiled sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa) seed meal as a replacement for soyabean, which is the main protein source. During both the starter and finisher stages, 180 unsexed Anak 2000 broiler chicks were randomised to five (5) treatment diets in which soaked and boiled sorrel seed meal substituted soyabean meal at 0% (control), 25, 50, 75, and 100%. In a completely randomise design, the chicks were distributed in groups of 36 birds per treatment, with three replications of twelve (12) birds per replicate. Although final body weight and feed intake decreased when soyabean meal was replaced with soaked and boiled sorrel seed meal in broiler chicken diets by 50%, daily weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), carcass yield, breast muscles, thighs, and drumstick yield were unaffected by up to 100% replacement. The cost per kilogramme growth was unaffected, whereas the cost per kilogramme feed decreased as the amount of sorrel seed meal in the diets increased. Soybean meal can thus be totally substituted with soaked and boiled Sorrel seed meal while maintaining biological performance and boosting broiler production costs.
