TIGER NUT (Cyperus esculentus) OIL BIODIESEL | Journal of Applied Chemical Science International

The goal of this study was to see if tiger nut oil biodiesel might be used as an alternative fuel for diesel engines. In a soxhlet extractor, tiger nut oil was extracted using regular hexane as the solvent. Methanol was used as a reagent and sodium hydroxide as a catalyst to transesterify the oil. The biodiesel and oil were characterised using ASTM and EN biodiesel methods. The fatty acid profile of the oil and biodiesel was determined using the HP 6890 Gas Chromatography analyzer with HP ChemStation Rev A 09.11 [1206] software for data collection and analysis, and the results show that the oil and biodiesel contain 75 and 73 percent oleic acid by weight, respectively. The mineral content of the biodiesel was determined using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, and the amount of minerals in the biodiesel was found to be within ASTM biodiesel guidelines. The Fourier transform Infra The fingerprint region 601-1709 cm-1 exhibits irregular multiple peaks, whereas the C=O bond peaked at 2922 cm-1 in the functional group part 1800-3500 cm-1, according to red analysis of the oil. Because the biodiesel's qualities are within ASTM biodiesel limitations and are comparable to those of diesel fuel, it was established that tiger nut oil biodiesel can be used as an alternative fuel for diesel engines.
