URBAN GREEN SPACES ACCESSIBILITY: THE CURRENT STATE IN NIAMEY CITY, NIGER | Journal of Global ....
The rapid rate of urbanisation observed at the global, regional, and national levels raises land, energy, and water demand, causing negative environmental effects and lowering populations' well-being and resilience. Urban green spaces are seen as one way to make cities more resilient and sustainable in the face of climate change in this regard. However, in many African towns, urban green spaces are inaccessible to the majority of inhabitants, particularly in Niamey, where the most important green space, the green belt, has deteriorated. As a result, the purpose of this research is to assess the accessibility of urban green spaces in Niamey according to the WHO minimal requirement in order to get insight into their current situation. Using primary, secondary, and geospatial data, as well as personal field observations, qualitative and quantitative evaluations of the per capita green index, the distance to green spaces, and the quality of urban green spaces are undertaken. According to the findings, Niamey's urban green spaces per capita are 6.04 m2 fewer than the WHO's minimal criterion of 9 m2; thus, the demand gap is projected to be 4,043,143.92 m2. This per capita green index varies by commune, with 0.155m2, 0.242 m2, 2.30 m2, 21 m2, and 0.008 m2 for communes I, II, III, IV, and V, respectively, indicating that urban green spaces are not equally accessible throughout the city. In addition, we discovered that 58.46% of respondents do not have access to urban green places within 15 minutes of walking distance. This circumstance, combined with the poor quality of urban green spaces, demonstrated their deplorable state. According to the report, local officials should increase investment in greening projects, develop a synergy of action in greening initiatives, and fight parcel allotment corruption to boost access to urban green spaces and thereby improve the current situation of urban green spaces.
