VERMITECHNOLOGY: AN ECO APPROACH OF SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT IN RURAL AREAS | Journal of Global .....

Solid waste generation and management has become one of the most pressing environmental issues in recent years. Humans, livestock, and crops produce around 38 billion metric tonnes of organic waste each year (BMTY-1) over the world. Intensive livestock farming and poultry farms generate massive amounts of organic solid waste in India's food industry. It is critical to use these waste products in the production process for both economic and environmental reasons. Although a variety of physical, chemical, and microbiological procedures for disposing of organic wastes are now in use, they are time-consuming and expensive. As a result, there is a pressing need to develop a cost-effective, shorter-duration alternative approach that is particularly suited to rural settings. Vermicomposting (VC) has been reported to be a practical, cost-effective, and quick technology for the efficient management of organic solid wastes in this area. VC is crucial because it turns trash into money by utilising a low-cost eco-friendly solution combined with the activities of earthworms. Vermicompost is high in plant nutrients, contains every important nutrient, enhances soil structure, texture, aeration, and water holding capacity, and helps to avoid soil erosion. N-fixers, P-solubilizers, cellulose degrading micro-flora, and other helpful micro-flora are abundant in vermicompost. Cattle dung, horse manure, pig waste, sheep waste, chicken droppings, cow slurry, kitchen garbage, agricultural wastes, and other organic wastes created in villages have all been transformed into vermicompost by various species of earthworms. VC is especially advantageous in rural regions because it focuses on solid waste management while also providing chemical-free organic fertiliser to boost crop output, rural community jobs, and low-cost, high-gain technology.
