WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT IN KATHMANDU, NEPAL: PRACTICES AND CHALLENGES | Journal of Global Ecology....
The government of Nepal faces a challenge in managing wastewater in Kathmandu. The present wastewater disposal practise is to discharge effluents untreated into water recipients such as the Bagmati and other rivers and streams, causing major environmental and public health issues as well as ruining the city's visual appeal. Based on available materials, this report evaluates wastewater management practises, difficulties, and potential solutions in Nepal. The data shows that wastewater generation in the Kathmandu valley has increased by 79 percent in 15 years, from 81x106 l/day in 2000 to around 145x106 l/day in 2014. To comply with wastewater legislation and rules, wastewater must be treated before discharge. Decentralized treatment can help achieve this. To accomplish unpolluted wastewater discharge into receiving water bodies, rigorous planning, adequate and appropriate treatment, and regular monitoring are required.
